Sawn timber

An integral part of the Finnish economy

Top quality raw materials, first-class products

Finnish timber is known worldwide for its high technical and visual quality. The raw material grown in the northern climate is close-grained, dense and durable.

A significant export product

On average, Finland produces approximately 12 million cubic meters of sawn timber per year. Up to 80 % of this is sold on export markets to over 70 different countries. Sawn timber is one of Finland’s most important export products.

Wood from Finland

The Wood from Finland program promotes the export of Finnish sawn timber and wood products and aims to increase awareness of Finnish sustainable forestry.

The little giant of timber

There are over 70 industrial-scale sawmills in Finland. Although Finland’s annual sawn timber production accounts for only about 3 % of the world’s softwood sawn timber production, Finland is nevertheless among the five largest sawn timber exporting countries. The sawn timber is transported to its destination by sea or road.

Sawn timber and further processing

From Finnish forests to a high-quality export product

Customer-oriented, starting from the forest

The lumber trades made guide the work of the harvesters in the forest. The logs are cut into lengths of 3.1–6.1 meters at 30 cm intervals and sorted at the sawmill by length, top diameter and quality.

Modern production

Finnish sawmills have invested heavily in recent years. The sawmills are modern and environmentally friendly industrial plants that produce high-quality products from renewable raw materials.

By the last chip

It takes 2 cubic meters of logs to produce one cubic meter of sawn timber. In some plants, the utilization ratio is even higher. However, the raw material is utilized 100%, as chips, bark and sawdust are used in the paper, pulp and energy industries, among others.

Huge range of products

In Finland, commercially utilized softwood species are spruce and pine. After debarking, the logs are sawn into thousands of different products based on length, thickness, width and quality of the piece. Structural lumber is also graded according to strength.

Processed products for various applications

Sawmills process some of the timber produced into primary products. These include planed, impregnated and thermally modified timber and glulam, which are used as raw materials in the construction and furniture industries in Finland and abroad.
